Choosing a rack sounds trivial until the cabinets arrive and the doors will not close, the PDUs have nowhere to go, or the floor cannot take the load. Rack sizing comes down to four numbers: height in U, width, depth and weight capacity.
What is a rack unit (U)?
One rack unit, written 1U, is 44.45mm (1.75 inches) of vertical mounting height. It is the standard increment for all 19 inch rack mounted equipment. A 1U server is 44.45mm tall, a 2U server is 88.9mm, and so on.
The 19 inch figure refers to the mounting rail width, not the cabinet width. That is the single most common misunderstanding when people first specify racks.
Standard rack heights
Height is quoted in U. The common options:
- 42U (roughly 2.0m): the classic datacenter standard, fits most rooms and doorways
- 45U and 47U (roughly 2.2m): more capacity in the same footprint, popular in colocation where space is charged by the tile
- 48U and above: maximum density, but check your ceiling height, containment and whether it fits in the goods lift
- Under 24U: wall mounted or small comms cabinets for edge and office use
Do not fill a rack to its stated U capacity on paper. You need space for PDUs, patch panels, cable managers and airflow blanking. A realistic usable figure is around 80 percent of the nominal height.
Width: 600mm vs 800mm
Both take standard 19 inch equipment. The difference is what fits beside the equipment.
600mm is the standard width and the most space efficient. It suits typical enterprise racks with moderate cabling.
800mm gives you 200mm of extra side channel for vertical PDUs, heavy cable bundles and fibre management. Once you are running high port counts, dual PDUs and a lot of fibre, 800mm stops being a luxury and becomes the thing that keeps the rack serviceable.
Depth: 1000mm, 1200mm and beyond
Depth is where people get caught out. Modern servers, especially GPU nodes, are deep, and you still need room behind them for cabling, PDUs and airflow.
- 1000mm: works for standard 1U and 2U servers and network kit
- 1200mm: the safer default for datacenters, and necessary for deep GPU chassis and heavy cabling
- 1200mm+: required for some Supermicro and OEM GPU platforms, and for rear door heat exchangers
Always check the deepest device you intend to install, add rear clearance for cable bend radius and PDUs, and only then choose depth. Retrofitting depth is impossible; you buy new racks.
Weight: static and dynamic load
Racks have two ratings. Static load is what the rack can hold standing still. Dynamic load is what it can hold while being rolled on its castors, and it is always lower.
A typical quality cabinet is rated around 1,000 to 1,500kg static. That sounds enormous until you fill it: a fully populated GPU rack can reach 1,200kg or more. Storage racks are similarly brutal.
The rack is rarely the limit though. Your raised floor is. Many raised floors are rated well below what a modern dense rack imposes on four small castor contact points. Check the floor loading and the point load, not just the rack spec, and plan the delivery route: lifts, ramps and door widths all have limits too.
Airflow and clearance
Racks only cool properly if air goes through the equipment rather than around it. That means blanking panels in every unused U, brush strips on cable entries, and sealed gaps between rack and floor.
Leave the recommended clearance at front and rear for door swing and service access, and never block the rear with cable spaghetti. Airflow, not the cooling plant, is the most common reason a hall cannot reach its design density.
